Calling all fans of Madam President Halimah Yacob, the Istana is looking for volunteer gardeners to prune, water, grow and harvest the gardens and lawns at the Istana!

Working days would be three days every month, starting from January 2018, from 9am to 12noon. Except for January, the working days would be on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week of each month. The working days for January would be on the second week.

The volunteer gardeners are expected to cover seven to eight areas within the Istana. This would included the front lawn, the Japanese Garden and the Spice garden.

This programme, called the Volunteer Gardeners@Istana programme, is Madam President Halimah Yacob's brainchild. Just today, Madam President Halimah Yacob had planted a nutmeg tree herself on the Istana grounds.

Other achievements by Madam President Halimah Yacob to date are her Picnic@Istana programme, where four picnics would be held at the Istana every year. Previously, the Istana was only made available to the public five days annually, during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali, Labour Day and National Day.

To ensure Istana's security, volunteers would need to sign up for the sessions that they want. So far, 50 volunteers have signed up to take care of the Istana's greenery.

Officers from the National Parks' Board (NParks) would be on hand to oversee the workers. Gardening tools would also be provided.

To potential volunteers who are still hesitant, it seems that experience is not a requirement as the officers from NParks would be there to guide you.

According to Mr Wong Tuan Wah, group director of Fort Canning and Istana at NParks, this programme might be expanded if there is an overwhelming number of volunteers who are keen to help take care of the Istana's greenery. If there are many who are keen to help prune the gardens at the Istana, they would consider adding more days to the programme.

Are you keen to volunteer your time?
