A 50-year-old man by the name of Chia Yew Boon was sentenced to 12 weeks’ jail on Thursday, 14 December 2017 after pleading guilty to three charges of insulting the modesty of a woman on public transport in June 2016.

According to Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Ashraf Hassan, investigations revealed that on 3 June 2016, Chia had intruded into the privacy of a woman by using his mobile phone to record two videos of her inner thighs and underwear when they were on board an MRT train travelling between Woodlands and Jurong East.

Later in the afternoon, Chia was on board a bus when he recorded two videos of a woman in school attire, capturing images and her inner thighs and underwear as well.

Three days later, Chia was recorded another video of a 33-year-old woman whom he found attractive when they were on board a train travelling between Jurong East and Clementi.

A 25-year-old male commuter had confronted Chia and demanded to check his mobile phone. Refusing to hand the phone over, Chia alerted the victim about what happened. Still refusing to hand the phone over, the duo told Chia to alight from the train. After which, the SMRT staff alerted the police about the incident and Chia was arrested.

Represented by Mr Amarjit Singh Sidhu, Chia could have been jailed for up to a year and/or fined for each charge of insulting the modesty of a woman.
