It's going to be 2018 soon. That means fireworks as we count down! Aren't you excited?

Some people will think that this means having to shell out big bucks for either a hotel room with a view or a table at one of those high-end rooftop bars to enjoy the view. This isn't exactly true.

Hotel rooms and rooftop bars are definitely more comfortable but there are plenty of places around the city where you can get a fantastic view of the fireworks without paying a single cent, transportation excluded of course.

For your viewing pleasure, here's a list of all the places you can watch the fireworks FREE!

Marina Barrage

Yes, this is the place where all the kite-flying take place.

Other than a view, this place also has the added advantage of being extremely windy, which is a good thing, if you're squeezing with a lot of people.

Bay East Garden at Gardens by the Bay

This place is directly facing the left side of the floating stage. It's a much lesser known location, which means less people in the know too!

Here you can enjoy the fireworks while basking among all the greenery.

Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands

This place will be crowded, make no mistake. Everyone knows about this place and you can be absolutely sure that they will be right there with you, fighting for the best spot.

However, it is right outside the mall, which means easy access to food, water and the toilet as and when you need it. Sometimes convenience does have its advantage.

The Promontory and The Lawn at Marina Bay

We've put these two places together because they're right next to each other. The Promontory might be a familiar place to you; it's the place where Ben & Jerry's Chunkfest was held for a couple of years. It's the cute patch of land jutting out into the Marina Bay.

The Lawn is right behind the Promontory. It also has the advantage of being totally without any structure blocking it from the bay, which means a better view too.

What you should know!

Do note that the footways along the Esplanade Bridge and Bayfront Avenue along the Helix Bridge would only be used for transit. You would not be allowed to congregate there. The footway along Benjamin Sheares Bridge will also be closed to pedestrians from 5pm on Dec 31 to 2am the next day.

Additionally, there would also be road and lane closures during countdown.

Do take note so that you would not be caught unaware!

Police's safety measures

The police will also be deploying crowd control measures. Officers from the Special Operations Command, Protective Security Command, Public Transport Security Command and Emergency Response Teams will also be on standby to ensure the public's safety.

Do also note that, on the day itself, bags and personal items might be subjected to checks. This is to ensure the safety of everyone.

The police will also be regulating the crowd at The Promontory, One Fullerton or Merlion Park, Esplanade Park, Esplanade Waterfront Promenade, Marina Bay Sands Promenade and other areas within Marina Bay. If there are too many people, the crowd might be diverted to other areas.

The public is advised to heed the advice of police officers and traffic marshals on duty that day.

What should you do if in trouble?

The police advised the public to remain vigilant against crime and and adopt the following crime prevention measures:

- Look after your belongings at all times;

- Be cautious of strangers when approached;

- Stay close to your friends or move around in groups;

- Avoid contact with unruly crowds; and

- Approach any police officer deployed or dial 999 for urgent assistance.

If you spot any suspicious people and activities, you should report them to the Internal Security Department at 1800-2626-473 or to the police (999 or SMS to 71999).
