Perhaps you may not have noticed this, but for most public toilets in Singapore, some of the female toilet main entrance doors are often left closed whereas the ones for the males are left open.

If you really think about it, it doesn’t make sense. With the fact that the urinals in the male toilet being open for all guys to see, shouldn’t it be the other way round? Well, it seems that the placement of the urinals is such that the they are completely out of view from outside the main entrance.

Nonetheless, according to A Guide to Better Public Toilet Design and Maintenance by the Restroom Association (Singapore), there is actually a strong justification for the above discovery.

Upon further uncovering of the truth, it appears that there’s actually a theory behind the phenomenon as to why the main door for the gents are always open, and that for the ladies is always shut.

The truth lies in that the main doors for the male toilets remain open so as to avoid as much physical contact as possible, as guys are likely not to wash their hands after using the urinals. This makes up the first theory.

Furthermore, the study has proven that females are more particular about personal hygiene, and they’re trusted to wash their hands after using the taps at the basins. Hence, they’re trusted to be touching the main door of the female toilet after having sanitised their hands.

Bet you didn’t know!
