Leong Yew Thong, 39, pretended he was Ms Claire Chiang's ex-husband to get his victims to put $45,000 into a company called Card Orient Investment. He also posed as a senior police officer.

He had embarrassed Ms Chiang when one of the people he cheated called her to complain about her "ex-husband", Deputy Public Prosecutor Malcolm Tan had said during an earlier hearing on May 27.

Ms Chiang is the executive director of Banyan Tree Gallery and deputy chairman of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Community Relations Committee. She also heads the Society Against Family Violence.

Leong is a bankrupt who has been cheating since 1982. He pleaded guilty on May 27 to cheating three people of $45,000 and extorting $250 from another.
