Man armed with weapon in police stand-off at Woodlands Checkpoint?!
A man was spotted with a weapon at Woodlands Checkpoint?! It sounded like a scene right out from a movie but that was what happened at about 1:30pm today (5 Jan).
A 43-year-old man was arrested after a tense stand-off with the police. He was armed with a sickle and was waving it around carelessly to keep the police away from him.
Before the stand-off, the man had carjacked a woman's car at Upper Bukit Timah Road. He had then crashed the car into a lamp post just before the Woodlands Checkpoint.
According to witnesses, the man had "gone crazy" after crashing the car. He had gotten off the car with a sickle and started shouting at the other drivers. He had demanded that they all get down from their cars.
Despite the police trying to resolve the incident amicably without hurting anybody, the man did not respond.
In the video footage taken by witnesses, the man could be seen staggering about with a sickle and waving it about. A policeman was engaging him.
Eventually, the man was subdued and arrested. Numerous policemen were seen on the scene and the man was pinned on the ground.
The man was eventually arrested for armed robbery, being in possession of a weapon and drug-related offences. He was believed to be under the influence of drugs during the incident.
After searching the stolen car, the police had found controlled drugs, a knife, an axe and a sickle.
The police is currently investigating the incident.
