20 days after she was found floating unconscious during her swimming lesson at Kallang Basin swimming complex, a six-year-old girl has died in hospital on Tuesday afternoon (Jan 9).

The swimming mishap happened on Dec 20 last year, when her coach was giving one-on-one training to a class of five in the 0.9m deep pool. She was believed to have been waiting for her turn.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force responded to the ambulance call from the complex at 7.20pm, and she was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She died in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, after she was moved there.

The girl’s grandmother was reported by Shin Min Daily News to have said the family simply want to know what went wrong.

She also said that the girl's death serves as a “reminder to others to be more alert and not repeat this tragedy”.

According to her, the girl was "very obedient". The family had also been looking forward to her starting Primary 1 this year, and her uniform had already been bought.

It’s been reported that the coach’s licence has been suspended.

A representative of Sport Singapore, who runs the complex, mentioned the organisation has gotten in touch with the family for support. They are also assisting the authorities in investigating the unnatural death, which is still ongoing.
