Taking videos of women without their consent not once, but twice, and hurting several narcotics officers - on Thursday (25 Jan), a 22-year-old man was sentenced to nine months and ten weeks’ jail for outrage of modesty and other charges.

Adith Sarvotham’s 10 charges, beyond insulting a woman’s modesty, includes three counts of causing hurt to a public servant, using abusive words against a public servant, mischief and criminal trespass. He had six other charges taken into consideration during sentencing.

In the first outrage of modesty, he had been doing his national service when he attempted to take a video of a Singapore Armed Forces signal specialist on 15 Jan 2016.

She had been in the shower at 5 SIR building when she noticed a mobile phone at the bottom of the cubicle. She shouted, and gave chase when he attempted to flee.

A red singlet was later found in the trash bin outside Adith’s barrack room. He was told to wear it and he was picked out by the woman during an identification parade.

The second charge happened on 7 July that year, when he trespassed into the woman’s toilet at Golden Village Yishun. He had tried to film the 27-year-old sales assistant in the cubicle next to his, but was noticed by the woman who told her boyfriend.

He confronted Adith, who denied the filming, and they contacted the authorities. He was then arrested.

Between these two times, he admitted himself into the Institute of Mental Health for depression on 5 May 2016. When he tried to leave three days later and was refused, he damaged a door that required $364 worth of repairs.

Last year on 3 Feb, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers arrested him for drug-related offences. As he was questioned, he became agitated and abused an officer. He also put up a struggle when they tried to handcuff him, hurling vulgarities and kicking a staff sergeant’s left arm and a senior CNB officer on the face and abdomen.

His sentence was backdated to June 2017.
