When she spurned his advances, he repeatedly stabbed a student nurse at the void deck of her home.

The Indian national, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, was found guilty of attempted murder on Wednesday (14 Feb).

He had gotten to know her while he worked as a healthcare assistant at the hospital where she was attached.

The 34-year-old man had wooed her despite her having a boyfriend, and she played along for a while. However, she later apologised and said, “it was a joke all along”.

He continued to harass her by making repeated calls after the rejection. She blocked his number, and used another to contact her.

He even turned up at her flat to ask for her hand in marriage a few times.

On 19 Dec 2013, he went once again to her home to propose. She called the police as he behaved aggressively after her rejection, and he went home.

Hiding a knife in his sock, he returned to the block and slept at the void deck to wait for her.

The next day at 8.30am, he confronted her and demanded a talk. When she refused, the accused stabbed her in the lower back, then in the abdomen when she tried to push him away.

When she fell, he kept on stabbing and slashing her on her head, neck, body and arms.

Her parents heard her screams and rushed to help their daughter. Her father pushed the accused away, and he fled after dropping his knife.

He was detained by two passers-by and arrested by the police.

While the accused told the police initially he had wanted to kill the victim as she “cheated on him”, in court he said he did not have any intention to kill her, but instead wanted to commit suicide in front of her.

The man also said could not recall what exactly had occurred after he stabbed her the first time.

The victim said that while the accused was stabbing her, he shouted "saavudi" in Tamil, which meant "die".

He also said: "If I can't have you, no man should have you."

His sentencing is set for a later date. He could be imprisoned for life or 20 years, and possibly caned or fined.
