Bookmaker jailed a week and fined $20,000 for accepting illegal bets!
Acting as an bookmaker at a coffeeshop, he had accepted a total of $240 in race bets.
On Monday (19 Feb), Heng Chaw Chew, 66, was jailed for two weeks and fined $20,000 for accepting bets for races in Singapore and Hong Kong at Hoover Coffeeshop, Block 65 Circuit Road, on Nov 19.
A raid on the coffeeshop by the police revealed Heng with two guidebooks - Punters' Way Sha Tin Races and Punters' Way Singapore Races - as well as the $240 cash.
He had been loitering near the coffeeshop to accept bets from punters, and had with him a record of 32 “win” and 28 “place” tickets, which were based on an illegal rate of $4 a ticket.
As he cannot pay the minimum $20,000 fine, he will serve a default jail term of one month.
