While you were sleeping: SCDF was hard at work saving the day (or night)
It isn't easy being a part of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)! While we were all sound asleep in our beds, the men from the SCDF were busy saving the day, or night.
A fire broke out at about 2:10am early this morning. A warehouse at Ubi Avenue 4 caught fire, according to a Facebook post by the SCDF.
It is understood that the affected unit belonged to Bez Balloons, a balloon supply company. Their party supplies, which consisted of items such as balloon, inflatables and helium tanks, had caught fire.
The fire had started on the second level of the unit and the fire had engulfed both the levels by the time the SCDF arrived on the scene.
The SCDF firefighters deployed two water jets as an immediate offensive firefighting tactic to control the blaze from within the building. Two additional water jets were also deployed to protect the adjacent units.
To reach the fire, the SCDF firefighters have to navigate narrow stairs through the dark and thick smoke.
The SCDF took two hours to extinguish the fire. After which, the firefighters moved onto damping down the area.
Damping down is a process in which water is applied to wet burnt surfaces immediately after the fire is put out. This is to prevent any potential rekindle of fire from the hot burnt surfaces.
Fortunately, there was no injuries reported. There were 11 workers in the unit prior to the fire but they had self-evacuated prior to the SCDF's arrival.
