He had not been keeping a proper lookout while driving on Mohamed Sultan Road when he turned right into Martin Road, colliding with a pedestrian.

However, delivery driver Kasmani Ahmat did not stop, and was captured driving away from the scene on a nearby CCTV camera as well as a taxi’s in-car camera.

The 63-year-old Sathiamoorthy Ramiah died shortly of his injuries after.

The 55-year-old driver was sentenced to eight weeks’ jail and banned from driving on Tuesday (27 Feb) for causing the death of someone through a negligent act, failing to render assistance and removing his vehicle without police authority.

A witness saw the victim lying in the road and another lorry stopped to render assistance to the victim.

When contacted by the authorities, Kasmani said he was at the scene, but was not involved.

However, further investigation showed that he had admitted to his wife via text message that he might have hit someone on the road.

His wife advised him to surrender himself for the hit-and-run accident.

At the time of the accident, it was raining heavily but traffic was light.

Kasmani’s lawyer Quek Ling Yi said her client now works as a cleaner and has five children to support.
