While working on the yet-to-be opened Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), a construction worker has died in an accident at the Lentor MRT station worksite.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force had been alerted to the accident on Thursday morning (1 Mar), around 4.10am. A man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Around midday, the staff appeared to have stopped working and were told to report for a safety briefing.

Lentor MRT station is located underground, and is targeted to be completed by 2020, as the second phase of TEL.

The design and construction of the station, as well as its related tunnels, was undertaken by China Railway No. 5 Engineering in a $247 million contract in 2013.

Workplace deaths had been falling as of late, with 42 last year compared to 66 the year before, according to the Ministry of Manpower statistics. Deaths in construction have decreased by half from 24 to 12.
