A former regional IT manager and his wife, Tay Wee Kiat, 39, and Chia Yun Ling, 41, failed in their appeal against their sentencing.

They had been sentenced to two years and four months', and two months' jail respectively.

They were found guilty of abusing one of their two maids. Their trial involving abusing their other maid is still pending.

On Friday (2 Mar), a panel of three judges representing the High Court has upheld the conviction.

Justice See Kee Oon said that Tay's original sentencing was "manifestly inadequate". The panel has thus increased his sentencing to 43 months.

His wife, Chia, however, has her sentence kept at the original two months.

What did they do?

Last March, District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan had found both guilty of abusing their Indonesian maid, Ms Fitriyah, 34.

Tay was convicted of 12 charges. Nine were for causing hurt and the others for instructing his other maid to cause hurt to Ms Fitriyah and trying to cover up his wrongdoings.

Tay had physically abused Ms Fitriyah. During the trial, the court heard that Tay had hit her head with canes and bamboo sticks. He had also slapped and kicked her when she was down. He was also heard to have grabbed her head and slammed it against a cabinet.

Other than beating Ms Fitriyah, Tay had also humiliated her. On one occasion, she had an incense bottled forced into her mouth and was also made to stand on one leg on a stool while holding another one over her head. Her ordeal had lasted for at least half an hour.

On the other hand, Chia had also inflicted physical abuse on Ms Fitriyah. She had slapped Ms Fitriyah and punched her on her forehead several times.

Ms Fitriyah was also forced onto all fours and kicked on their buttocks. She was also made to slap the other maid under the couple's employment.

This is not the end

As the couple had employed two maids, Ms Fitriyah from Indonesia and Ms Than from Myanmar, they were tried separately for Ms Fitriyah's abuse and will be tried later for Ms Than's abuse.

They had sent Ms Than back to Myanmar without warning. However, she had returned later to make a police report against the couple.
