The first bundle of Premier League matches took place last weekend with Liverpool and Chelsea making immediate statements regarding their title credentials. Thomas Tuchel's men are recognised as one of the main contenders this season and given Manchester City's opening day defeat to Tottenham, the Blues could wind up as Jürgen Klopp's biggest challengers. It is simply too early to accurately judge each team in the division and definitive takes should certainly be avoided after just one match, but it is interesting to note how different Liverpool's win over Norwich was compared to Chelsea's victory over Crystal Palace. The Reds profited from their attack above all else despite their clean sheet, with 19 shots accumulated which was the second-most of the weekend behind only Arsenal, who were forced to generate shots in numbers against Brentford as they lost 2-0. Liverpool's performance against Norwich witnessed their opponents generate 15 attempts for themselves, which could be deemed as a concern and will need to improve as the campaign progresses.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesLast season, the Reds allowed an average of just 8.5 shots on their goal per 90, but the Canaries mustered 15: not far from double that amount. Only two teams managed to muster 15 shots or more against Liverpool last season even despite the club's centre-back crisis with those two sides being Aston Villa and Manchester United.Chelsea gathered three points on the opening weekend by going about things in an opposite manner. Tuchel's men accumulated just 13 shots for themselves, which ranked them behind 12 other sides, but they faced just four shots in defence. The Blues placed an emphasis on control, and although their performance was more than deserving of a win, it did not follow the same path as Liverpool's victory.Klopp will expect his defence to improve, whereas Tuchel is likely to want more from his attack, with Romelu Lukaku potentially able to make the difference for the latter after his £97m move to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan. Whether the Belgian striker will improve Chelsea's ability to convert those shots as opposed to impacting their number of efforts remains to be seen, but the two title rivals will almost certainly want to steal aspects from each other's game. They are set to meet in the third round of fixtures at Anfield and ultimately, the team to get their weaker department in order at a faster rate could be the side to pick up three points.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated Articles
