THE short game is an area of golf that all club players can benefit from with a few handy tips.

David Lynn, a multiple European Tour winner, illustrates a few pointers that could go a long way to improving your game.

“It doesn’t matter how you play tee to green, if you can chip and putt, that’s where you make your scores,” says Lynn. “And that improvement feeds through your golf.”

Among the points he touches on are a good set-up, better shaft lean and using the bounce of the club.

Release the clubDon’t be too technical, but when you release the club more with the right hand, your use the bounce of the wedge, which means better chips and consistency.

Make bounce countWith eight degrees of bounce in your wedge, it helps you in many ways – ball contact, strike – keep your knees out of the shot. Release the bounce into the ground and not your leading edge.

Too much leanComing into impact this is too steep – the hands are too far forward. It’s all bad. The leading edge hits into the ground way too much, so you finish ahead of the ball and hit fat shots.

A good set-upThe ball is opposite your left heel, the hands and clubface are square and your weight is balanced. The knees are lightly flexed and you should make sure it feels comfortable and springy.
