Donny van de Beek was asked to pick his dream five-a-side team from the current Manchester United squad and few would have predicted the quintet that he came up with.

The Dutchman rustled up a team of two defenders and three midfielders, with no need for a goalkeeper, according to the midfielder.

While there would always be big names missing out as well, most would expect Cristiano Ronaldo to make the cut, but the Portuguese superstar missed out.

Van de Beek’s pretty rogue choice also omitted the likes of Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, but was adamant he had come up with a winning formula.

‘I think Raphael [Varane], I would pick him,’ Van de Beek told Rio Ferdinand on Vibe with FIVE.

‘I’m a big fan of Juan as well. Juan Mata, I think you need to pick Bruno [Fernandes] as well because he will make a lot of goals and give assists.

‘I go for Luke, Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic. We will win!

‘We have so many players, I have to make a decision, I make a tactical decision. Not always the best players win, the team wins.’

Van de Beek will not be worried about five-a-side teams this weekend but will be hoping to make it into the starting XI for the first time this season when the Red Devils play Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 24-year-old is yet to make an appearance this season, despite being fit and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blocking a proposed move to Everton as he considers the Dutchman an important part of his squad.

Competition for places in the United midfield is as fierce as ever, with Scott McTominay returning to training and Cristiano Ronaldo hoping to start in his first match since returning to the club.
