Missing out on a signing can often be a bitter pill to swallow.Should that individual enjoy success elsewhere, clubs are left with a sense of frustration for failing to finalise a deal. But that's not always the case.There are plenty examples of transfers clubs have benefited from missing out on, with a better option presenting itself further down the line. Here is a look back at five players the club were unable to secure the services of during this period.Jamal LewisLiverpool saw a £10million bid rejected by Norwich City for left-back Jamal Lewis last summer as the club sought back-up for Andy Robertson.The Reds instead turned their attention to Kostas Tsimikas, who made the move to Anfield in an £11.75m deal from Olympiacos.Lewis ended up leaving Carrow Road for Newcastle United, with the 23-year-old sealing a £15m switch to St James' Park.He made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies last term.Timo WernerLiverpool had been tracking Werner since 2017 and were considered strong favourites to sign the German in the 2020 summer window.The Athletic claimed that Werner had held talks with Jurgen Klopp and was planning to go house-hunting in Merseyside at the end of the Bundesliga campaign, such was his expectation of a move to Anfield. But this soon changed when the Reds became unwilling to meet the £54million release clause of the German, prompting the 25-year-old to have a change of heart.Chelsea were prepared to do just that, however, and completed a deal.Werner's Stamford Bridge career to date has been mixed.
