Five winners after Liverpool end summer transfer window with one signing

The summer transfer window of 2021 has now closed with Liverpool only making one signing. Their rivals spend significantly as Manchester City broke the British transfer record to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa while Chelsea splashed out to re-sign Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan. Manchester United also invested heavily, signing Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and confirming the return of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus. We take a look at five winners despite Liverpool only adding Ibrahima Konate to their squad. READ MORE:Mohamed Salah sent PSG transfer message after Liverpool contract claim Ibrahima Konate It sounds obvious but as the only major incoming transfer at Liverpool this summer, the £36million signing from RB Leipzig has to be heading the list of winners. An exciting prospect for the future, Konate, still waiting to make his competitive debut, is something of a rough diamond who Liverpools coach staff will have to polish up in the months ahead in the hope the 22-year-old becomes one of their gems. Gini Wijnaldum Winner? You bet he was. Yes, most Kopites are sad to see Wijnaldum go after five years of sterling service at Anfield but the Dutchman landed on his feet with a lucrative Bosman free transfer move to petrodollar-fuelled Paris Saint-Germain. Widely tipped to have been heading to Barcelona to join up with fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman, his former national team coach, the midfielder instead plumped for the City of Lights over the Camp Nou and a contract reputedly worth almost twice as much. He still got to play alongside Lionel Messi anyway when the Barca legend moved on after the cash-strapped Catalan giants were unable to fund his salary anymore. Harvey Elliott The 18-year-old spent most of last season farmed out to Blackburn Rovers, making 42 appearances for the Championship club. For others, such as Harry Wilson, who finally departed Anfield permanently in a £12.6million move to Fulham this summer aged 24, multiple loans (five in his case) could follow without prolonged periods back at his parent club to prove his worth. Despite his tender age, Elliott though has returned and shone in the first month of the campaign. Xherdan Shaqiri With a spectacular overhead bicycle kick against Manchester United in front of 101,254 fans in a pre-season friendly in Michigan shortly after arrival at Liverpool, the Swiss international became an instant Kop Idol. Snapped up from relegated Stoke City, Shaqiri went from being a deluxe squad option in his early days at Anfield to an expensive luxury of late, turning out for just 552 minutes of Premier League action in 2020/21 (the equivalent of little more than six full matches). At 29 years of age, a player of his standing needs to be involved much more so hell be hoping that he now becomes one of the main men for Lyon. Takumi Minamino An underwhelming first year at Anfield followed by a mixed bag loan spell at Southampton could have prompted an early end to the Japanese forwards Liverpool career. However, no moves were forthcoming this summer so Minamino has been given a second chance at the Reds to try and rediscover the form he showed when lighting up the Champions League with Salzburg and earning his big move. You sense this could be a pivotal campaign for him as he approaches make or break time on Merseyside. Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles
