I agree with Ms Dawn Chen Wenhui's points (Impressed by cleanliness, efficiency of some foodcourts in Shanghai, Nov 28).
The cleanliness standard in Singapore's hawker centres can be improved. I am sure most Singaporeans have seen tables being wiped with a grubby-looking cloth that is used over and over again without being cleaned or disinfected. I still see hawkers handling money and then food with the same hand. I saw a rat running across a hawker centre in the day recently, and reported it in the Ministry of National Development's OneService app.

It's better to see dirty or unhygienic practices or items out in the open. This way, if I feel the items are dirty, I won't eat there or will perform cleaning action on utensils that seemed dirty. If the table is greasy, bring along some wet wipes with disinfecting action. Clean your own table while eating in the public. This is better than some eating places somewhere else where outside it looked spanking clean. If you peeped into the kitchen, you find all kinds of pestilence residing in every corner. While you may be enjoying the delicious food, you never know what is inside. Singapore is a wonderful place for cheap, and tasty food available in public eating places. The cleanliness standard can still be upped a bit more, but don't expect the public places to maintain 5 star standards. Let's all do a part to make the public eating places a little better, instead of depending on the poor amahs, or ah cheks to clean up after you. I really hope most of us practice this gracious eating style instead of leaving a mess on the table after you enjoyed the food, or complain to everyone about how dirty the place looks.
