(CNN)For athletes preparing for the biggest event of their lives, it would usually be a cause for celebration. But 100 days out from the Tokyo Paralympics, Oksana Masters was confined to a hospital bed recovering from surgery on her leg.

At the time, thoughts of winning a medal at the upcoming Games were far from her mind; just getting to the starting line would have been enough.
