This weekend I have … a half-hour, and the kids are all right, aren’t they?

‘Trying’When to watch: Friday, on Apple TV+.

A mellow comedy about adoption, “Trying,” starring Esther Smith and Rafe Spall as two 30-something Londoners attempting to acquire a child, debuted to little fanfare in 2020. At the close of the third season (the finale airs on Friday), they have decided to welcome two — a brother and sister — into their apartment. The local council still has to decide whether or not they can keep them. And they may have to leave the apartment, too.

The series can tend toward the twee, and the characters can exasperate. (Never Imelda Staunton’s social worker, but she left after Season 2.) Yet the show has a sweet center — very sweet, like a Dairy Milk dipped in honey — and its adoption plot refreshes the family sitcom.

… an hour, and I’m up in the club.
