Jürgen Klopp gives Liverpool hope of extending his tenure, and FSG must do everything they can

How should I know whats in three years? These were the words of Jürgen Klopp (as reported in the ECHO), responding to a question about his Liverpool future. Its a very valid point: three years after Klopps first pre-season with Liverpool, he was a Champions League winner. Just a year after that, he had added the Premier League to the trophy cabinet and a deadly pandemic had swept the world. There is only so much forward planning that can be done. However, it is FSGs job to at least try. Their initial appointment of Klopp is by far the best example of the owners getting it right, securing the long-term success of the club in a spectacularly prescient move. The managers latest comments will have at least pricked some ears in the boardroom: it would be ridiculous to claim that the remarks represent serious encouragement from Klopp, but he has at least remained somewhat more ambiguous on his post-2024 future than in the past.It had been assumed in many corners that Klopp would call it a day at the end of the current contract. He had seemed to all but confirm that previously, going as far as to say that it could even be his last ever coaching stint. Nobody would begrudge the manager the chance to leave on his own terms: football is the most important of the least important things, after all, and only the German knows what is best for him. However, if he is wavering on a step back from the game in 2024, FSG have a responsibility to try and keep him at Liverpool.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesTo give the owners due credit, they are well aware of the gem they have in Klopp. Reports vary, but it seems that the manager is comfortably the highest earner at Liverpool, surpassing any individual star players. Similarly, while FSG had some fair reservations over an extension for Jordan Henderson, it appears as though a Klopp intervention will be enough to get a new deal for the captain over the line. The managers central role in the clubs success is not lost on anyone within the hierarchy. Why might Klopp be wavering on the retirement date he had pencilled in? Perhaps the pandemic has played a part: he is a manager who feeds on emotions, and has been robbed of more than a year of Anfield crowds. During that time, he has also overseen a sterilised Premier League triumph followed by a soulless collapse of the title defence it feels as though Klopp is the kind of manager (and indeed the kind of man) who would want to put this right, restoring success at a time when it can be fully enjoyed.Klopp also has an excellent crop of youngsters with which to work. His beaming smile as he discussed Harvey Elliott after the Burnley match said it all there is a sense that he is genuinely excited to develop such a talent. He may also feel that he has a lingering point to prove about managing multiple great sides: at both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund, he did not last much beyond a single cycle. He has nothing to prove to Liverpool fans, for whom he will now always be a legend, but building a second exceptional side at Anfield would help cement him among the games all-time greats.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesThe manager was also right to say that there is no rush. FSG can do little more than just sit tight for now, while doing all they can to keep Klopp as happy as possible. Even this may not be enough: while the German's latest comments are broadly positive for Liverpool, he also once again alluded to the plan of a year's break in 2024, potentially followed by the national team job."If 2024 is over for me in Liverpool, then there will be a year's vacation first. Hansi Flick's contract would have to run until 2025 for [Germany] to be an option for me. Nobody has to call me in 2024. "If that's how things pan out, so be it. No doubt it would be one of German football's finest days. One thing is clear, though: FSG must do everything in their power to hold onto Klopp for as long as he is willing to stay.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated Articles
