Kadeena Cox wins women’s C4-5 500m time trial gold for ParalympicsGB

Kadeena Cox set a new world record to retain her gold medal in the women’s C4-5 500m time trial as ParalympicsGB enjoyed yet more success in Tokyo on Friday morning.

The 30-year-old, the champion in Rio back in 2016, had Canada’s Kate O’Brien to beat and stepped up to the challenge to set an astonishing time of 34.812 seconds in the Izu Velodrome.

It was the third gold medal of Cox’s Paralympics career after she claimed victory in both cycling and athletics events five years ago.

With the win, Cox also became the first black athlete in history to secure a gold medal for Great Britain in cycling across disabled and non-disabled athletes.

Her latest triumph strengthened Britain’s hold on second place with a tally of seven golds and 21 medals in total at this summer’s Games, eight off leaders China.

‘I tried to enjoy this moment. I did enjoy Rio but I feel like I was so trying to go well that I didn’t really enjoy it so I really wanted to enjoy it,’ Cox told Channel 4 shortly after her win.

‘It didn’t hit me until I got to the podium and then I realised why I had done it all so it’s a bit overwhelming.’
