Bayern Munich have already begun work on a transfer for Chelsea striker Timo Werner amid the possibility of a January deal, a report claims.Werner moved to Chelsea from RB Leipzig following a run of explosive form for the German club. However, the switch to the Premier League has not worked out for him so far. Indeed, summer signing Romelu Lukaku has already scored a quarter of the goals – three – Werner has managed since the start of last season.Werner’s 12 strikes have also come few and far between, leading to speculation of an early exit from his contract.Bayern have become the leading transfer candidates. Former Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann – who brought the best out of Werner – has taken over there.Despite reports claiming that Bayern are aware Werner’s contract only runs out in 2025 and so feel reluctant to start a deal, Football Insider claims they have done just that.Indeed, the German champions have already started the ground work over a deal to take the German back to Germany.Furthermore, a January deal is a ‘possibility’, the report adds. Bayern are looking at initially finding cover for Robert Lewandowski, who turned 33 last month. He has showed no signs of slowing down this season, scoring eight goals in five games. However, his contract is also a concern as it runs out in the summer of 2023.Werner has proven his credentials in Germany and has a strong relationship with Nagelsmann. As such, he could even become Bayern’s number one if and when Lewandowski moves on.However, he remains a Chelsea player and Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has insisted that he has a big role to play.In fact, Tuchel last week said there would be opportunities for Werner to play alongside Lukaku up front.“I am sure we will find games and solutions where we play with both of them,” the manager said.“We have already played with double strikers and Timo and Romelu can be good together.“Timo likes to play alongside a reference and Romelu is our reference. The most important thing is he finds his confidence and joy.“The players are in charge to take their position and fight for their position. This is where we are. We are happy he scored and played. From here on we go.”Werner played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s season opener against Crystal Palace in Lukaku’s absence. However, he has only played 10 minutes in the Premier League since.READ MORE: ‘Impossible’ for Chelsea to let player leave, says Thomas Tuchel
