Liverpool transfer reminder issued by Ismaïla Sarr as Watford make winning Premier League start

In all the excitement of the new season, Liverpool fans have come perilously close to forgetting what we all know really matters: transfers. Thankfully, Ismaïla Sarr was on hand to issue a reminder. The winger has been much linked with a move to Anfield in the past, and he shone as Watford made a winning start to life back in the Premier League. There is much to recommend Sarr to Liverpool. He certainly has the pace to slot seamlessly into Jürgen Klopps attack, and he knows how to use the ball when he gets into dangerous areas. He is primarily utilised as a right-footed right-winger, which is not ideal for Klopps system, but he also has a reasonable body of past work as both a left-winger and a centre-forward. This versatility is a big asset and it is worth remembering that Sadio Mané, Sarrs compatriot, also came to Liverpool primarily as a right-sided winger.Watford deployed Sarr on the right against Aston Villa, but there was still plenty to be gleaned from his performance from a Liverpool perspective. Most notably, his one-on-one ability was on display for all to see: Matt Targett got a particularly close-up view, and ended up being withdrawn at half-time after a torrid 45 minutes. The change from Dean Smith also allowed for a tactical alteration, but it is no coincidence that Targett was the one sacrificed. Sarr ran him ragged, beating him for both pace and skill time and time again.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesNot only that, but the Senegal international had the end product when he reached the positions of maximum opportunity. He will not be officially credited with the assist for the opening goal, as new signing Emmanuel Dennis took two bites at the cherry before slotting the chance away, but the pull-back is what made the breakthrough possible. Klopp is not looking for someone who can make it to the byline and then cross it blindly: Sarr has a mind that can keep up with his feet, no small achievement. If he was unlucky to not get the assist, Sarr was perhaps a little fortunate to get on the scoresheet himself. After finding his way beyond Targett once again, his effort looked destined to be dealt with by Emiliano Martínez. However, a wicked deflection lifted it over the Argentine stopper and into the back of the net. Even so, its no less than his performance deserved: 10 touches in the penalty area and four chances created represented a very productive afternoon at Vicarage Road, particularly against opposition whom many have tipped for a top-half finish. There is still time for Liverpool to do something in the transfer market, and Sarr has put his name back on the radar at an opportune time. Cover for the front three will be high on the list of priorities; the fact that the Watford man will also be off to the African Cup of Nations in January is far from ideal, but ultimately the tournament will only see Liverpools stars miss up to two games.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesAt 23, Sarr also perfectly fits the FSG age profile. Diogo Jota was signed at the same age last season; it perfectly combines experience and potential, offering both immediate impact and room to grow. The prospect of Sarr doing his growth under the tutelage of Mané, who has a good relationship with the Watford man, is an enticing one. What is slightly less enticing is the price. Watford had to part with a sizeable fee to acquire Sarr in the first place, shelling out £27 million to Stade Rennais. The market has since suffered because of the pandemic, but the Hornets return to the Premier League will alleviate much of the financial pressures being felt by some other clubs: they would certainly demand more than their money back, with the £40 million price cited last summer still sounding about right. It looks unlikely that FSG will sanction that kind of spend in this transfer window, particularly without further outgoings: success in getting Divock Origi off the books may alter the picture late on, but ultimately a deal for Sarr looks unlikely for now.Even so, Liverpools recruitment team will undoubtedly be taking note at how at home Sarr looks in the Premier League. His stay was a brief one last time out while he continued to post good numbers in the Championship, there is always the doubt as to how that will translate to the top flight. The early signs are promising: if he can keep this up then Liverpool may well come calling, whether that is within the next fortnight or further down the line.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated Articles
