Mouths were agape and jaws dropped when news of Daniel James' proposed £30m transfer to Leeds United broke on social media; the common consensus, understandably, was that Leeds had overpaid for an over-priced asset in a saturated market. From a Liverpool perspective, there was envy considering the club have been struggling to offload their fringe players, let alone earn steep figures in the process this summer. To compare, Harry Wilson, who had top-flight experience and who is the same age as James, went for less than half of his fellow countryman's transfer fee earlier this transfer window. In the past, Michael Edwards has had a magical touch in offloading Liverpool's deadwood. But this summer, that spark seems to have dwindled. But there is a reason why Liverpool have not been able to replicate sales of Daniel James' magnitude they simply do not have a commodity of the same ilk.At 24 years of age, James represents potential and a player Leeds can invest in for the long-term future of the club. He has resale value too.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated ArticlesIn the past, this is why the likes of Dominic Solanke and Rhian Brewster were able to be sold on for a higher fee than their perceived true values. But this summer, almost all of Liverpool's excess weight in the squad lack resale value and future potential. At 26 years old, Divock Origi is the prime example of this. He has scored just seven goals in his last two seasons and he is on the back of a campaign where Liverpool's goalkeeper found the back of the net more times than he did in the Premier League. Origi's transfer represents a risk for potential clubs, and he does not have much chance of a resale value either. Should Origi join a new club and sign a five-year contract, he would be 31 years old by the end of it, and his value in the market would have been significantly reduced considering his age. Liverpool's deadwood assets are simply just not as enticing at the moment as in the past.Fans are right to be envious of United for being able to pull off a deal of such magnitude for James but they must also accept the reality that Liverpool are not in the same boat.Liverpool will have to change their strategy in the market, with sales of fringe assets unlikely to generate large sums for the considerable future considering the players Klopp has at his disposal. That only way that would change is if one of the club's bigger assets is sold... and that would pose an even bigger risk. For now, Liverpool simply have to succumb to the reality of the new situation they are in, and accept that they must find alternative solutions to generating income and moving unwanted players on.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated Articles
