When Jurgen Klopp leaves Liverpool, there will be countless articles and books written which will delve deeply into what he achieved during his time on Merseyside. A whole host of key players will be named who made invaluable contributions during the Klopp era. One man who didnt offer too much on the pitch over his time with the Reds but is worthy of a mention in the story of Liverpool and Klopp is Marko Grujic. The Serbian international, who left the club this summer to join FC Porto in a £10.5million move, was the managers first signing for the club back in January 2016. But his impact upon the Liverpool first team was minimal over the five-and-a-half seasons he spent contracted to the club. Grujic only made five starts, all of which were in the League Cup, while seeing far more game time in his loan spells at Cardiff City, Hertha Berlin and Porto. As he was only 19-years-old when he moved to England, theres no shame in failing to make the grade at one of the biggest football clubs in the world. But as his time with Liverpool is now officially over, its interesting to look at how other first signings for Reds managers in the Premier League era performed for the club, and how their careers unfolded thereafter.READ MORE:Liverpool could sign Barcelona or Bayern Munich stars for free next summerFabio BoriniBrendan Rodgers opening foray into the transfer market saw him sign a 21-year-old striker with whom he had worked at his previous club Swansea. Fabio fits the model of what we're trying to do in building not only for now but also for the future. He's a big talent, Rodgers said at the time. But in two seasons on Merseyside, Borini only scored three times in 38 appearances. He was arguably more use to the club during his loan spell with Sunderland in 2013/14, as he netted a winning goal at Stamford Bridge when Chelsea were battling with the Reds at the top of the league. After joining the Black Cats on a permanent deal in 2015, the Italian has since also represented Milan, Hellas Verona and he currently plays for Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey.Jordan HendersonWhether you look at Kenny Dalglishs caretaker spell in charge, in which Luis Suarez was the Reds first signing, or the opening transfer following his permanent appointment in the summer, the legendary manager will be tough to top in this category. A week before his 21 st birthday, a midfielder called Jordan Henderson moved from Sunderland to Liverpool in June 2011. What he has achieved in the decade since barely needs recapping here, but its fun to reminisce when his achievements include captaining the Reds to Champions League, Premier League and Club World Cup glory across 2019 and 2020. And while Kopites might be concerned about their skippers contract situation, Hendersons place in club legend is assured no matter what else happens from here onward. Milan Jovanovic arrived at the club after he did, but the deal was agreed while Rafa Benitez was still in charge, so the first true signing on Hodgsons watch was Joe Cole. But unlike as was the case for his successor, neither of the future England manager's first signings worked out well at all. Cole made 32 appearances in 2010/11, scoring three goals, then spent a season on loan with Lille. He returned to Liverpool for Rodgers first campaign at the helm, but by January 2013 he had re-joined former club West Ham. Cole later also played for Aston Villa, Coventry City and Tampa Bay Rowdies before retiring in 2018. He is now an academy coach at Chelsea and an occasional TV pundit too.JosemiBenitez made a couple of excellent signings during his first summer in England, but Josemi would not prove to be one of them. The Spanish right-back made a total of 35 appearances in his 18 months with the club, assisting two goals, before joining Villarreal in a swap deal with Jan Kromkamp.Josemi was very visible in the celebrations in Istanbul, but his last involvement in the Champions League that season occurred in the memorable group stage win over Olympiakos. As chance would have it, hed later represent four different clubs in Greece, before rounding off his career by winning the Indian Super League with Atletico Kolkata in 2014.Join our official Liverpool fans groupConnect with Liverpool fans from around the world in our official supporters group.Keep up to date with the latest breaking news, transfer gossip and everything LFC with thousands of Reds!Join our group for FREE by clicking here!Jean-Michel FerriShortly after being given sole control of first team matters the disastrous joint-manager scheme with Roy Evans having been abandoned Gerard Houllier gave a homegrown prospect his debut and also made his first signing. The young lad was Steven Gerrard (no further explanation necessary), but the signing was a 29-year-old French midfielder called Jean-Michel Ferri, who would only make two appearances for the Reds.It was rumoured he was brought in purely to be Houlliers dressing room spy, but the truth was that injuries meant he was unable to make any impact with Liverpool. Ferri moved to Sochaux in 1999 and retired at the end of the following season. Michael StensgaardMost of the players in our look back achieved very little on Merseyside, but they did at least play some games for Liverpool. The same cannot be said for Roy Evans first signing, a Danish goalkeeper by the name of Michael Stensgaard.Hes actually better known for some off-pitch misfortune in England, as he injured his shoulder while setting up an ironing board. What can you say?Stensgaard later played for FC Copenhagen and was on the books at Southampton for a spell, but his Liverpool career never got going in the slightest.Injuries ended his career when he was only 26-years-old, and he has since gone on to be a lecturer, a football agent and mental coach.Lets hope that the first signing made by whomever succeeds Klopp shares more in common with Jordan Henderson than with the other players in this article.Read MoreRelated ArticlesRead MoreRelated Articles
