Nasser Hussain and Michael Vaughan have both praised India’s incredible fightback which saw them clinch victory on the final day of the fourth Test against England.

After leading by 99 runs after the first innings, England started day five on 77-0 chasing 368 to win on a flat wicket at the Oval, with all three results still a possibility. 

However, a fine spell of reverse swing bowling after lunch from star seamer Jasprit Bumrah, coupled with several pieces of inspirational captaincy from Virat Kohli, meant it was India who went into the final Test of the series with a 2-1 lead. 

Despite England’s batting collapse either side of lunch which saw them lose five wickets for five runs, Hussain believes you have to applaud the tourists’ performance.

‘I think sometimes you just have to give credit to the opposition. We have all been disappointed with the way England have batted, the techniques and there’s been collapses. People going home tonight having not seen the day’s play will go: ‘140-1, 145-6. Another England collapse. Haven’t we been here before?’ Hussain told Sky Sports.

‘I think today’s example of a collapse – you have to give credit to Bumrah, you have to give credit to Jadeja, you have to give credit to Umesh Yadav coming back the way he did. Thakur – everyone said why Thakur? Well this is why; he gets useful runs, useful wickets.’

India’s decision to leave out star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on a ground which is notorious to take spin was slammed by many fans and commentators alike.

But Vaughan thinks that Kohli and the rest of his team have silenced those doubters in fine fashion. 

‘It has been a tremendous Test match. It is fantastic Test victory for India. They have been questioned, particularly on day one and they came back on day two with the ball,’ he told BBC Test Match Special.

‘England’s 290 in the first innings felt so light. India batted beautifully in the second innings.

‘That bowling performance was as good as fourth-innings bowling display as we’ve seen for a long, long time. It was high class.For a day and a half this was an England Test match wicket, where it moved around a bit, and England competed.

‘As soon as it became a Test wicket that you get overseas – no swing, no seam, a little bit of spin, you needed some pace and variation and batters to bat a long time – as soon as it became that kind of wicket England have been very poor.’

England’s batting woes continue going into the fifth Test starting on Friday, with captain Joe Root and openers Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed the only members of the top seven to reach double figures in the second innings. 

Meanwhile, India, who will be buoyant with their first Test win at the Oval since 1971,  travel up north in a bid to finish the summer with a 3-1 series victory.
