Peter Capaldi has ruled out returning for Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary special.

The 12th Doctor will not be among those returning to the sci-fi for the milestone special, which is set to air in 2023 and will star David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

Peter recently reflected of multi-Doctor stories: ‘It’s very hard to imagine how you’d get a decent crack of the whip when there’s 14 of you, you know?

‘So I think I’d rather leave it as is, because I loved my time on Doctor Who and loved doing it.’

He added to SFX: ‘I don’t want to be Doctor Who’s assistant. It used to drive me insane on Doctor Who, not being able to talk about anything. It’s like, “Who cares?!” But then I get into trouble.’

It wouldn’t be his first time in a multi-Doctor special, although he has only briefly appeared in them previously.

He made a short appearance in Day Of The Doctor, which starred David Tennant as the 10th Doctor and Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor for the BBC show’s 50th anniversary.

Meanwhile, Peter’s final episode, Twice Upon A Time, saw him alongside Jodie Whittaker in her first appearance as the 13th Doctor, with a brief appearance from David Bradley in the role of the First Doctor (originally played by the late William Hartnell).

Peter played the 12th Doctor from 2013 to 2017, before Jodie took over as the 13th Doctor.

While he won’t be returning for the 60th anniversary next year, we will see the return of some Doctor Who legends as David and Catherine have filmed scenes. Meanwhile, Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney will play a character named Rose (thought to be the daughter of Catherine’s character Donna).

Neil Patrick Harris also joined the cast of the special.

Jodie’s final episode will air this month, in the epic special The Power of the Doctor, which will see her battle three of her oldest enemies – the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Master.

As well as old enemies, the Doctor will also reunite with some old friends, with one of the shots showing her with returning companions Ace (Sophie Aldred), and Tegan (Janet Fielding).

Showrunner Chris Chibnall teased that ‘Jodie’s final feature-length story contains a plethora of treats and surprises for audiences and fans’.

On the return of ‘two of the most beloved companions in the show’s history’, he added: ‘They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies; the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, in one huge story!
