Raheem Sterling pelted with objects as racist chanting overshadows England win over Hungary

England’s 4-0 victory over Hungary has been marred by racist abuse being hurled during Thursday night’s World Cup qualifier.

Before the game even kicked off there were boos and jeers as Gareth Southgate’s team took the knee.

Matters deteriorated further with Raheem Sterling being struck by several objects thrown at him by Hungary fans as he celebrated his 55th opener.

Luke Shaw was also hit in the second half while monkey chants from the ultras section of the ground further soured an otherwise positive away performance from the Lions on their journey to Qatar.

Ten minutes before the end of the match, ITV’s Gabriel Clarke described the scenes.

He said: ‘There have been missiles thrown and I’m sad to report there has been some monkey chanting from supporters in the ultras section directed, at first, at Raheem Sterling and then at Jude Bellingham when he was warming up.

‘I’m not sure whether the players heard any of that but the Hungarian FA have warned fans not to do this.

‘But it has been audible and it has been visible.’
