Screen protector that costs $145?! Shop fully refunds domestic helper after complain on Facebook by employer goes viral
She had sent her domestic helper to Lucky Plaza to get a phone screen protector, thinking it would cost around $20.
Upon having the protector placed on the phone screen, the helper was shocked to find out the Xiaomi Mi 5s’s new screen protector cost $145.
She was then pressured into forking out the money as the transaction was caught on closed-circuit television camera.
After Denise Han had posted on Facebook about the incident, the story went viral. She has since updated that the shop, EZ Advance Trading Enterprise, has given her a full refund.
Stores in the area reported that while no one has complained about EZ Advance Trading Enterprise, the most expensive screen protectors cost from $20 to $48 at most.
EZ Advance Trading Enterprise’s manager, who gave his name only as John, said his screen protectors cost such a high amount to do its higher quality.
“(The other stores) are my competitors, they would say that their prices are much lower than mine,” he said.
However, he gave a full refund to Han’s helper, as he wanted to close the matter and move on.
Loy York Jiun, executive director of the Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), said another consumer had complained about the shop before, saying they had only told them the price of $139 with one-year warranty after the screen protector was place on.
That customer eventually paid $69 after forgoing the one-year warranty.
