"I would like to propose the name of this bridge as the Sultan Nazrin Shah Bridge and request that His Majesty approve the date of its inauguration in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday this year," he said.

For the record, Sultan Nazrin's birthday for this year would fall on Nov 3.

Commenting on the opening of the new bus route, Ahmad Zahid said it would connect ML89 Bagan Datuk to Teluk Intan and ML90 Bagan Datuk to Kg Gajah under the MARA Liner Sdn Bhd (MLSB) initiative.

The 1.54km-long bridge across the Perak River connects Bagan Datuk district with Central Perak which would benefit 70,300 residents around the two districts.

The project, which costs RM406 million, also involves the construction of a road from Pekan Jalan Datuk for a distance of 8.2km using an "elevated ride" to overcome the problem of peat soil land next to Bagan Datuk.

Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Public Works, Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Mohamad and MARA Chairman, Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
