The uproar first began in May 2021, where user @ToriDawn817 discovered that her face looked slimmer on TikTok's camera function - despite not having activated any filters. She later took a video where she passed her hand over the upper half of her face, whereupon the effects of the filter immediately (and discernably) kicked in. "I don't feel comfortable making videos right now, as long as that's still a thing," Dawn states in the clip. "Because this is not what I look like."
