Twenty years ago, Mercedes had to withdraw from the Le Mans 24 Hours after its CLR flipped into the air no fewer than three times during the race week.

Mercedes had dominated the previous year's FIA GT Championship, but the drama of Le Mans 1999 ended its participation in sportscar racing's top class.
