WWE SmackDown moved on from SummerSlam and hit the road to Extreme Rules this week as its two top champions found out their next challengers.

Becky Lynch is set to face Bianca Belair at next month’s pay-per-view, while Roman Reigns will take on Finn Balor next week in two huge matches giving blue brand fans plenty to look forward to.

The show started with The Man coming out to celebrate her win over the EST of WWE last weekend, as she insisted she wasn’t going to apologise for the way she took the title from the former champ.

Belair came out and didn’t try to make excuses, instead laying out a last-minute challenge of her own, which was disputed by Zelina Vega, Carmella and finally Liv Morgan, who got a great reaction from fans.

A brawl between the four potential challengers led to an elimination Fatal 4 Way, with Vega and Carmella taken out first by Bianca and Liv respectively, leading to a great match between the two fan favourites, which the former champion won with a K.O.D.

Over in the Universal Title picture, Paul Heyman seemed nervous after Brock Lesnar’s shock return at SummerSlam, and he wasn’t even allowed into Roman Reigns’ locker room at first as Jimmy and Jey Uso were very suspicious and grilled him on what he knew (nothing, apparently).

At the end of the night, The Bloodline – who could be expanding soon after Naomi made the jump to SmackDown in a backstage segment with Sonya Deville – made their way to the ring as the Tribal Chief was flanked by the Usos and his special counsel.

Heyman took to the mic and delivered as he always does, before Finn Balor hit the ring and ranted abouthis Universal Championship shot being stolen from him by Baron Corbin and John Cena, and he laid down a challenge for next week’s SmackDown.

He had some backup from the Street Profits when things got physical, sending the Bloodline running and also setting up to the next challengers to the Usos’ tag team gold.

Happy Corbin wins big in Vegas and Dominik Mysterio goes solo

In the second match of the evening, Chad Gable faced Cesaro in a brief match that sadly hinted that maybe the Swiss Superman’s foray into the main eventscene won’t be replicated any time soon.

Of course, they showed some great technical skills in the time they had before Otis hopped in and caused a DQ, leading to a beatdown after the bell.

Baron Corbin’s fortunes have finally turned a corner, as the star – who was down on his luck before SummerSlam in Las Vegas – arrived in style after winning big in Sin City.

Driving to the venue in a fancy car, he was decked out in a stylish suit, hat and watch as he told everyone they can now call him Happy Corbin before calling out Big E and trying to buy the Money In The Bank briefcase.

The New Day man refused, and Corbin insisted he was too happy and rich for this as he left the ring and avoided any physicality.

It’s great seeing the latter shining in a new role, and proving to a sceptical side of the audience just how talented he is.

Elsewhere, Edge and Seth Rollins continued their epic storyline as the former addressed his win over his rival before the former Messiah realised he has to be more like the Rated R Superstar to progress.

In tag team action, the blossoming team of Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs beat the Dirty Dawgs, with Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode providing good opponents for the entertaining duo.

Finally, Rey Mysterio told his son Dominik he would step back to let his boy be his own man, setting up a singles match with a mystery opponent, who turned out to be Sami Zayn.

The pair had a fun outing, with the wily veteran winning clean after a Helluva Kick – which was nice to see, and adds another wrinkle between the father and son duo.

*WWE SmackDown airs Fridays at 1am on BT Sport 1.
