Worlds provide bowlers chance to see action after two years

PETALING JAYA: There’s light at the end of the lanes.

The bowlers’ frustration at being idle for nearly two years is coming to an end as the World Championships will make its return in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from Nov 3-16.

The bowlers’ last international assignment before Covid-19 was at the 2019 Philippines SEA Games.

At the world meet, Rafiq Ismail will get a chance to defend the men’s singles gold he won in Hong Kong 2018 while Adrian Ang and Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam will be out to retain the men’s doubles title.

As for the women, seasoned campaigners Esther Cheah, Sin Li Jane and Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman are hoping to make amends after a disastrous outing in Las Vegas in 2019, where they failed to defend the team title and returned empty-handed.

The Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC) secretary general Maradona Chok said the bowlers will certainly take part once approval has been obtained from the National Sports Council (NSC).

“We have written and requested for a budget from them to send a team. If all goes well our bowlers will be back in action soon,” said Maradona.

“We have also asked for their assistance in getting the bowlers to resume training. It has been more than three months since they last trained.
