This house won a 1964 design award sponsored by a trade group to promote the use of concrete in residential building. It was designed by Fred McDowell, an architect who worked extensively in Southern California in the mid-20th century and was responsible for a number of buildings at nearby Pitzer College.

The property is within a 15-minute drive of the Claremont Colleges, a group of five liberal arts schools that includes Scripps College and Harvey Mudd College. San Bernardino is about 45 minutes to the east. Driving to Palm Springs takes about an hour and a half.
