‘Destiny 2’ Is Testing Destructible Environments In A Secret Zone

Destiny 2JB3Something curious has been discovered by intrepid players glitching into zones theyre not supposed to be able to get to inside Destiny 2. No, this does not involve any story spoilers or datamines, just something interesting that Bungie may be testing for the future of Destiny. The secret area is the Quarantine Sector 236, which is an area in the EDZ that I believe at one point we went to in a story mission to reclaim our light. But these days, Bungie uses it for testing, though they may stop now that players have figured out how to get there. The video below comes from YouTuber JB3 who got into the zone with friends. Though the title suggests secret statues are the big draw of the zone, a new addition, thats not what Im focused on.The statues areprobably nothing. I believe theyre placeholders Bungie uses to create a sense of scale for areas, knowing how big a Guardian would be in comparison to the environment. I remember people saw these in the Festering Core strike area before that was live.Rather, the interesting thing here is the first time weve ever seen destructible trees in Destiny. These trees, as shown in the video, can be shot or blown through with melees or shoulder charges, a physics interaction that does not occur anywhere else in the game. This may be especially significant given that we are apparently headed to a wooded area for the Witch Queen expansion. The theory is Old Chicago, but regardless, its clear theres some greenery and trees there, confirmed by a recent teaser shot. So if Bungie is testing some sort of tree-busting physics upgrade for the game, its possible it could be deployed there.Old ChicagoBungieIts not that much of a stretch of the imagination to think Bungie could be planning an upgrade like this. Weve seen them wanting to experiment with environments more as time has gone on. Beyond Light brought us the changing weather conditions of Europa, a first for the series, so no, I wouldnt rule out the idea of a forest containing breakable trees. The idea of destructible trees or environments is not revolutionary for the industry, of course, but it would be a significant change for Destiny which has pretty much nothing like this at all, and hasnt for seven years now. Occasionally players can break through Hive gunk or wood or rocks in a way to open doorways, but thats about it. If this just became passive part of the environment, that would be a big change. But if Old Chicago and its forest get breakable trees, what happens to the EDZ and its many forests? Would that system be ported there? Hate to break it to you, but if Old Chicago is coming, my guess is that the EDZ is headed to the content vault as the oldest, largest area remaining in the game from D2 vanilla.
