LOS ANGELES, March 8: US road movie Nomadland swerved controversy in China and accelerated towards award season glory Sunday as it topped the prizes at the Critics Choice Awards, picking up best picture and best director for Chloe Zhao.

The film about van dwellers living on America’s spectacular open road also won cinematography and adapted screenplay, confirming its Oscars frontrunner status two days after the Academy voting window began.
