Le Matin Patisserie at ION Orchard to close doors after 1 year in operation
Helmed by Noma’s former pastry chef, Mohamed Al-Matin, Le Matin will cease operations on 29 February 2024, barely a year after it opened at the ION Orchard. Customers and fans of its delectable gourmet savoury and sweet treats were taken by surprise when the brand announced that they are shutting down via an Instagram post.

Chef Matin started the French-inspired cafe as an online business in 2020. He then moved into a takeaway space at Raeburn Park later the same year. Two pop-ups at Paragon and Robinson Road followed suit. However, the 37-seater chic establishment at the ION Orchard was set up in February 2023. It was received with much applause, with people lining up in queues.
The patisserie gained fame for its outstanding dishes like Chutoro Brioche Feuilletee, Seafood pot pie, Moules Marinieres and Sake Lees and Macadamia Choux.
The dishes were a reflection of Chef Matin’s experience as pastry sous chef at the ‘World’s Best Restaurant’ Noma’ in Copenhagen, and the two Melin-starred Restaurant André in Singapore, which is now defunct.
Le Matin earned 3 spoons (highest accolade) for the Museum of Ice Cream’s Sweet Spot Awards.

In a long Instagram post, dated 23 February 2024, Chef Matin and the team wrote:
“Dear cherished patrons and friends of Le Matin Patisserie,
As we reflect on our journey from the humble beginnings of our patisserie during the pandemic to the vibrant and beloved establishment we are today, we are filled with immense gratitude for each and every one of you who has been a part of our story. Our last day in ION Orchard will be on 29 February and we will be fulfilling the rest of our online orders for the month of February.”
Although the reason for the sudden closure is not mentioned, high labour costs, a rise in the price of ingredients and soaring rental charges at the ION Orchard are some of the factors that can be considered.

According to 8Days, it took visitors by surprise when Le Matin discontinued their all-day dining menu from 1 January 2024 onwards. It included delicious dishes like Crab Waffles and Steak Frites. Later, the applewood-smoked cruffins were also dropped ahead of the Chinese New Year.
Instead, they only focused on budget-friendly snack options like Kouign-Amann, glazed with butter and caramelised sugar and pain au chocolat with Valrhona dark chocolate.
Plans of reopening at other locations have not been announced, but the team has mentioned that they will be back with something new and exciting.
