Cans of Heinz Toast Toppers were pulled from supermarkets back in 2015 but a Facebook group 3,000-strong is begging for the return of the 'simple and cheap' product

Customers hungry for a taste of nostalgia are demanding the return of a much-loved food item that was discontinued nine years ago. Heinz Toast Toppers were pulled from supermarket shelves in 2015 after being popular for decades.

The creamy cans came in a variety of flavours - from chicken and mushroom to cheese and ham and mushroom and bacon. People could spread it on their toast and grill until it bubbled.

Now, years after its disappearance, such is the desire today for Toast Toppers that they've even reportedly gone for more than £50 on eBay. A Facebook group for those hoping to one day see its return has been set up with 3,000 followers.

Heinz Toast Toppers were popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s (

Aimee Foy, who lives Manchester and runs that group, told Sky News: "It was just a really nice but versatile snack. Like a lot of people, I have really nostalgic memories of having it as a teenager. It was tasty, but also really simple and cheap, especially when you compare it to how much you have to spend if you're getting a meal delivered by Uber Eats or something."

She went on to claim that there remained a big hankering for the product all these years later and noted its relative cheapness would likely be a key factor in its popularity amid the ongoing cost of living crisis. Aimee added: "I've seen tins on eBay that were six years out of date but going for more than £50, which just shows how much people love it."

The price of Toast Toppers was around £1 when there were discontinued, Aimee recalled, but she feels that even if they were twice that cost people would "definitely" still buy it. "It's obviously not a la carte or anything, but we loved it - and I'm sure that people would jump on it if Heinz did decide to bring it back," she said.

The call for its return has not gone completely unheeded by Heinz itself. The company's UK Facebook page has posted a meme in the past referring to customers' love of the product. Fans should not get their hopes up too soon about any potential comeback - but the firm has said it won't rule it out.

A Kraft Heinz spokesperson told the same outlet: "Toast Toppers were a huge hit with Brits back in the '70s and '80s, but as consumer tastes and trends evolved, Toast Toppers sadly fell out of favour, so we took the decision to pull them from sale in 2015. It simply wouldn't have been feasible to continue making them, despite the iconicity of this delicious teatime snack.

"We don't have any immediate plans to bring them back, but we'd never say never and have plenty of exciting innovations in the pipeline that we're confident consumers will love."
