52-year-old businessman cycles 35,000km to raise funds for child cancer victims
KUALA LUMPUR: A 52-year-old businessman who cycled 35,000km through 26 countries for two years managed to raise RM315,000 for child cancer patients.
David Wu’s adventure began on Aug 31, 2017 and ended on Merdeka Day this year.
He was motivated by his sister who died from cancer in 2014.
The Alor Star resident’s cycling mission, called “Seven Wunders”, was to create awareness on childhood cancer and raise funds for cancer-stricken children at National Cancer Society Malaysia’s (NCSM) Children Home of Hope.
“When we speak of cancer we normally talk about medical care.
“The support system is much wider than that, and that was what the mission was about,” Wu said at a homecoming celebration at NCSM yesterday.
Wu’s most challenging moment was after being on the road for 11 months.
“I had a cycling partner but he decided not to continue. I had to mentally prepare to finish the journey on my own,” he said.
“As a Malaysian the biggest challenge is food. We are so lucky that in Malaysia whatever you want to eat is at your finger tip.”
The mission raised the amount through social media.
“The effort continues to keep raising up to RM5 million. I will not rest until I’ve raised up to at least RM1 million.”……
