Chaos erupts as high school students hit the streets

Violence erupted again on Jakarta streets on Wednesday afternoon, paralyzing parts of the capital as high school students protesting controversial bills clashed with security personnel. The rallies follow those initiated by university students across the country the day before. Hundreds of high school students from Greater Jakarta flocked to the Senayan area in South Jakarta, where the House of Representatives compound is located, and demanded an end to what they perceive as attempts by the government to roll back democratic reforms. Hundreds of students wearing their school uniforms initially gathered on Jl. Palmerah Timur in Central Jakarta near a government building adjacent to the House. Stones were striking the shields of police officers who had formed a barricade on Jl. Tentara Pelajar, Central Jakarta, at around 2 p.m. Police fired tear gas at around 2:30 p.m....
