Rented scooters absent from city streets as police threaten to impose fines

Rented electric scooters seem to be on hiatus from Jakarta's streets as the police threatened on Monday to fine anyone who uses them outside of the designated area for micromobility. Even in areas previously crowded by scooter renters such as the Senayan area of Jl. Sudirman and Dukuh Atas area in Central Jakarta, or Blok M area in South Jakarta, the green rented scooters are nowhere to be seen. Regulation on micromobility, including its designated areas, is still in the making. Previously, police said they would impose a fine on wayward rented scooter users who roamed the city’s streets. The police said they would use articles 282 and 104 of Law No. 22/2009 on traffic and transportation, which state that road users who disobey the police will be slapped with a maximum fine of Rp 250,000 (US$17.69) or a one-month jail sentence.
