THE world’s love for juicy steaks and all sorts of other meat and dairy products is fuelling global warming, according to a United Nations (UN) report. According to a report by UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation, livestock production accounts for 14.5% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. In Nov 2017, 15,364 scientists worldwide signed a ‘Warning to Humanity’, calling for a drastic reduction of the world’s consumption of meat. Taking that cue, Malaysia Meatless Day Campaign Committee will celebrate International Meatless Day with a charity carnival on Dec 1 at the Esplanade in Penang. Committee chairman Pishu Murli Hassaram said the committee expected about 2000 visitors. The carnival is supported by Malaysian Vegetarian Society and the state government, he said in a recent press conference More than 50 varieties of food and refreshments -- all meatless -- are expected to be featured at the event. Malaysian delicacies like kuih cucur badak, kuih buah melaka, kuih lopes, nasi lemak, curry puffs, and roti jala with potato curry will be part of the menu besides Western, Indian and Chinese items. Pishu said Malaysia is blessed with a tremendous variety of nutritious vegetarian delicacies and effort must be made to showcase the offerings. He said the carnival would be a celebration of a healthy diet and a green Earth. Pishu said that this year, they hoped to raise RM60,000 for Pertubuhan Kebajikan Komuniti Cakna Pulau Pinang and Sadhu Vaswani Welfare Fund through the carnival. State welfare, caring society and environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the carnival, besides creating awareness of the goodness of vegetarian food, will let visitors enjoy the atmosphere at the Esplanade. Food coupons for the event are sold at RM50 per book and can be bought at the two charity bodies, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Komuniti Cakna Pulau Pinang and Sadhu Vaswani Welfare Fund in George Town.
