SUBANG Jaya leads the way in smart solutions as it undertakes a pilot project using 5G technology to address parking, congestion and security issues. Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), in collaboration with TM One, the enterprise and public sector business solutions arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), have deployed three 5G-enabled use cases in SS15, Subang Jaya, to address specific issues faced by the community. MPSJ is the first local authority in the country to use the 5G standard in its daily operations. The pilot project involves the Smart Traffic Light, Smart Parking and Smart Safety as well as security solutions. The 5G-enabled Smart Traffic Light solution programmes traffic lights to respond to real-time, rich data collected by connected high-definition (HD) cameras and sensors to enable improved traffic flow and reduce idle time at red lights. Meanwhile, the Smart Parking solution enables real-time parking bay monitoring using HD cameras and Artificial Intelligence (AI) so users can search for vacant parking bays and reduce time spent searching for a spot. MPSJ enforcement officers can also monitor parking occupancy and illegal parking incidents from the command centre and deploy resources more efficiently. The Smart Safety and Security solution provides advanced surveillance and real-time monitoring through video streaming from sensors and HD cameras. Powered by AI capabilities and integrated with TM’s emergency response team, immediate action can be deployed in case of emergencies as well as predictive analysis on actual incidents for proactive response. TM chairman Rosli Man said the roll out of its use cases in 5G Demonstration Project (5GDP) locations were particularly selected for the area. “In Subang Jaya, we and MPSJ identified prior to the project that parking, congestion and safety issues were among the top concerns. “We can demonstrate how smart cities can be powered by 5G and hopefully throughout the 5G demonstration project (5GDP) period show how 5G-enabled solutions can solve the challenges,” he said, adding that the project was part of the 5GDP by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). MPSJ president Noraini Roslan said the council planned to instal more than 100 high-tech CCTV cameras in the SS15 commercial area to monitor parking and traffic flow. “Under the pilot project, the CCTVs will be equipped with enhanced technology and algorithms that can gauge the behaviour of motorists and alert MPSJ or the police if any urgent action is required,” she said. Through the partnership, the two parties will collaborate in the deployment of the 5G network with the roll out of three use cases, where the transmission of TM‘s 5G service and the use cases have been fully operational since November. Meanwhile, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said RM300mil was allocated for the next five years as part of its efforts to make Selangor a Smart City by 2025. “For 2020 alone, we have allocated RM50mil to focus on safety and monitoring, with about 2,000 to 5,000 CCTVs to be installed. “This will also be used for monitoring to deter pollution, as well as to upgrade our command centre,” he said during the signing of Memorandum of Collaboration between TM One and MPSJ at Empire Hotel in Subang Jaya. Signing the agreement was TM One executive vice-president and chief executive officer Ahmad Taufek Omar and Noraini.
