Majority caught drink driving in Johor are youths aged 23 to 40

JOHOR BARU: Drink driving continues to be a menace in the state, with police seeing a spike in the number of motorists caught for the offence in Johor. Johor Traffic chief Supt M. Kumarasan said that just in two weeks, they arrested 64 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol. This compares to a total of 59 drivers arrested for drink driving in the state for the whole of last year. “Since the beginning of the month until March 14, we have conducted about 27 operations. “Those arrested are between the ages of 21 and 65,” he said during a press conference at the Johor Police Contingent Headquarters. Supt Kumarasan added that a majority of those caught were aged from 23 to 40, making up 70% of the total arrested. When asked about the highest blood alcohol reading obtained during the 27 operations, he said it was 240mg per decilitre, three times the limit needed to fail a breathalyser test. Those arrested have been charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and were brought to court.
