Liverpool ready to hit back at 'outlandish' claim if raised in Prem meeting
Liverpool will tell clubs who believe the Reds will threaten the Premier League’s integrity by playing a weakened side upon its restart that such claims are “outlandish”, according to a report.Jurgen Klopp‘s side were on course to set a Premier League points record before the season was halted, having gained 82 of a possible 87 points from their 29 games until the start of March. That run of 27 wins from 29 put the Reds 25 points clear of nearest challengers Manchester City, who have been unable to find the spark that saw them hold off Liverpool in the title race last season. As such, The Telegraph claims that an unnamed Premier League executive raised fears on Friday that Klopp could opt to play a weakened side, given that Liverpool need two wins to claim the title. However, the newspaper says that if the issue is raised in tomorrow’s crunch shareholders’ meeting, Liverpool intend to banish the claim as “outlandish” and “unjustified”.Such an issue is, however, not the most pressing in the list of hurdles the Premier League will have to overcome in order to restart the league. It was made clear last month that playing in neutral venues would be the only suitable way to finish the season given the threat of coronavirus, an idea which officials from Watford, Aston Villa and Brighton have all opposed.Monday’s shareholders’ meeting is set to include lengthy discussions about neutral venues as the Premier League looks to get the action back underway.Furthermore, the top two tiers of German football were given the green light to resume by the country’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, on Wednesday but since then, the entire Dynamo Dresden squad have been forced into quarantine.Indeed, Brighton chief executive Paul Barber confirmed on Sunday that a third member of the squad had tested positive for the virus in another blow to the Premier League’s plans for ‘Project Restart’.
