Man jailed over fatal police car chase
JOHOR BARU: A shop assistant, whose car collided with a police vehicle during a car chase and causing the death of a policeman, has been sentenced to nine years’ jail and fined RM36,800. Mohamad Shafiq Lokman, 25, pleaded guilty to four charges before magistrates Mohd Zaki Abd Rahman and Nurasidah A. Rahman at two separate courts here yesterday. He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by driving recklessly and Section 26(1) of the same Act for driving without a licence. Mohd Zaki sentenced him to eight years in prison and fined him RM30,000 in default 12 months’ jail, as well as revoking his licence for five years for the first offence while for the second offence, Mohamad Shafiq was fined RM1,800 in default three months’ jail. Meanwhile, in the second court, Mohamad Shafiq was charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from carrying out his duties and Section 15(1)(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 as he tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine. Nurasidah sentenced him to 12 months’ jail and fined him RM5,000 in default five months’ jail for the third offence and eight months in jail for the fourth offence. The sentences are to run consecutively. Also pleading guilty in the courts here were Muhamad Syahrihudin Abd Majid, 24, Muhammad Aiman Rohli, 24, and Siti Noor Aisyikin Mohamad Ariffin, 27, who were linked to the incident that took the life of the policeman. Muhamad Syahrihudin and Muhammad Aiman were in the same car when the incident happened while Siti Noor Aisyikin was the owner of the car driven by Mohamad Shafiq. Muhamad Syahrihudin was charged under Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without a licence, Muhammad Aiman for two drug-related offences under Section 15(1)(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act. The cases were prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Tengku Amir Zaki Tengku Abdul Rahman. It was earlier reported that 20-year-old Kons Nicolester Dadup Unggat was killed while his partner L/Kpl Mohammad Fadhirul Musa, 32, sustained a serious head injury after their patrol car overturned during a pursuit of a Perodua Myvi along Jalan Kangkar Tebrau-Jalan Tun Teja in Johor on Nov 1. The two policemen had noticed the Myvi being driven in a suspicious manner and instructed it to stop. The driver refused to do so and ended up colliding with the police MPV, causing it to crash into a Perodua Aruz from the opposite direction.
